Otto von Habsburg Prize

for Journalism in Minority Protection and Cultural Diversity in Europe 2005

Winner of the Otto von Habsburg Prize for Journalism 2005
Gian Antonio Stella (Corriere della Sera)
Celebration of the Award: 27 May 2005, Bautzen (Germany)

In the selection the Jury considered the quality of professionalism and journalistic standards applied in the work of Mr Gian Antonio Stella, at the most important Italian daily newspaper, Corriere della Sera. Since years he has published articles on minorities, mainly on Slovenian and German minorities in Italy. With his articles he contributed to positive knowledge about the situation of those two minorities, which Italian media often consider only from the point of view of the extreme right political part. In the year 2004 he dedicated several articles to celebration of 50th anniversary of the return of Trieste in Italy, celebration leaded by the extreme right political groups, and to the issue related to the name of the Victory square in Bolzano–Bozen with related quarreling between Italian right-wing groups and German community in South Tyrol. His articles gave the correct information on those facts and contributed to establish better relationship between minorities and Italian majority in both areas.
