Midas Prize for Journalism
in Minority Protection and Cultural Diversity in Europe 2006
Winner of the Midas Prize for Journalism 2006
Jan Diedrichsen (Der Nordschleswiger)
Celebration of the Award: 06 May 2006, Apenrade/AAbenraa
Mr. Diedrichsen has distinguished himself as a young journalist working for the only German-language newspaper published in Denmark – "Der Nordschleswiger" – particularly for the series of articles on "Minorities in Europe", which brought him the MIDAS Prize 2006. His skillful coverage of a variety of topics – such as the life of the Sorbian and Frisian minorities in Germany, that of the Carinthian Slovenes in Austria or the post-war inter-ethnic cohabitation in the former Yugoslavia – has made the readers of the newspaper aware of the conditions in which numerous ethnic groups live in Europe. A number of articles he published have also informed the audience of the latest developments in the field of minority protection and the promotion of minority-languages in the EU. Last but not least, the work of Mr. Diedrichsen was appreciated due to the fact that the style of his articles is particularly reader-friendly and the topics chosen have a high degree of relevance for the on-going public debate on minority issues.
